Tool Rental Insurance — What LocaYo Protection Covers
Complete guide to LocaYo Protection: damage coverage, theft, liability, deductibles, and what to do when something goes wrong. Read before your first rental.
Renting expensive tools to strangers used to be risky. With LocaYo Protection, every rental on the platform is automatically covered — but most users never read the fine print. Here's what you need to know before your first listing or booking.
What's included automatically
Every rental on LocaYo includes Protection at no extra cost. Coverage applies to:
- Accidental damage — drops, falls, misuse during normal operation
- Theft — if the renter steals or fails to return the item
- Third-party liability — basic coverage if the renter injures themselves using the equipment (varies by category)
Coverage limits
Coverage is capped per category. Approximate limits (2026):
- Tools & equipment: up to €2 000 per incident
- Electronics & cameras: up to €3 000
- Sports & outdoor gear: up to €1 500
- Event equipment: up to €2 500
- Other categories: up to €1 000
For items above these limits, you can purchase Premium Protection (additional fee, up to €10 000).
What's NOT covered
Important — Protection has exclusions. The following are not covered:
- Wear and tear from normal use
- Pre-existing damage not documented in pickup photos
- Intentional damage by either party
- Off-platform transactions — if you took payment outside LocaYo, no coverage
- Use against listing terms — e.g., commercial use of equipment listed as "private use only"
- Items left unattended in public (theft from car overnight = not covered)
How to claim
If something goes wrong:
- Document immediately — photos, video, written description of the damage
- Report within 48 hours via the app: Rental → Report issue
- Provide evidence — pickup photos (proving prior condition), return photos, repair quotes if applicable
- Wait for assessment — LocaYo support reviews within 3–5 business days
- Receive resolution — payout to your account, or rejection with explanation (you can appeal once)
Smart practices that strengthen your claim
- Always take pickup photos from multiple angles, with timestamps. Send them in the chat — that's your timeline proof.
- Use the in-app chat for all communication. Phone calls and SMS are not part of LocaYo records.
- Set fair deposits — a refundable deposit is held on the renter's card and gives you immediate leverage
- Note serial numbers for high-value items in your listing description
Should I get separate insurance?
For occasional rentals (a few items, low to medium value), LocaYo Protection is sufficient. For professional renters with 10+ active listings or items worth more than €5 000, consider supplementary commercial liability insurance — your insurer can advise on a small business policy.
The bottom line
LocaYo Protection covers you in 95% of typical rental incidents. The remaining 5% are edge cases (gross negligence, off-platform deals, specific exclusions). Read the full Protection terms in your account settings, take photos before every handover, and you'll sleep well at night.
